Erin Boyd

World traveler & athlete, Erin Boyd is always on the hunt for a new adventure. When she decided to take on some serious fitness goals, she turned to Julie Lohre for guidance.  “Even as a lifelong athlete, I had never been trained HOW to plan for optimal results for overall health and wellness. Julie’s approach is straightforward, confident, and professional. Results? I eat more, weigh less. I meditate daily. I now LOVE doing yoga and running. My skin and hair have never looked so good.

    Personal Information

    Hometown: Washington DC

I’m Erin Boyd and I am 34 years old. I’m married to an incredible husband. I am a life-long athlete with a background in powerlifting, rowing, running, and Cross Fit. Over the last decade, I have worked in international education – in Brazil and Colombia and now with a global university network.

Since I travel at least once per month for work, my fitness and nutrition suffered. Both are really important to me for my personal happiness, not to mention overall health and wellness. I needed a flexible, yet easy to follow plan and an accountability partner. I got so much more with Julie Lohre!

What are your greatest fitness accomplishments?

I started this year with “compete in a figure competition” as one of the top goals in my new year’s resolution journal. I had no idea how I would do it (or if I could do it). With a background in weightlifting, I’ve always admired Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bev Francis as role models. I’ve pushed myself in strength, but never in body composition. Competing has been a life-long dream, but I never took the leap and I didn’t know where to start.

With Julie Lohre’s coaching, I am excited to say that I competed in my first figure competition at the NPC East Coast Classic Championship!  The training has been much more challenging and rewarding than expected but the experience was so worth it!

Transformation info - How much have you changed in what period of time. What things have most helped you make that transformation?

What has been incredibly exciting is seeing the results of my Dexa Scan comparing this year to last year.  I have gone from 22 to 12% body fat!  I’ve also gained 6 pounds of lean muscle and lost 15 pounds of fat. Android fat (around waist) went from 14% to 4.6% and gynoid (around hips) from 29.4% to 16.4%.

Amazing to see the progress but the biggest difference is in my body composition and in my confidence. The most significant contributor in my progress has been related to my diet. Given my prior focus on fitness, I never fully understood that physique changes happen in the kitchen first – the gym next. I learned about how to calculate macro-nutrients (protein, carbs, and fat) and calories. I’m no longer scared of carbohydrates! I understand how they fit into my diet. It’s not even tedious. It’s empowering to know how the math adds up – especially when it means that I can eat more than before.

This is a lifelong lesson in healthy eating. It’s not only about hitting a target weight or hip measurement. That’s not it at all. It’s about understanding how to optimally fuel your body to be free – to go run for an hour without thinking about it; to lift your suitcase into the overhead bin without assistance; to have the tools to manage your life anywhere, anytime, and doing anything. I now know how to eat food that will make me feel at my best and strongest. I’ll be forever grateful.

I was inspired to learn how to cook better for myself, so I participated culinary boot-camp during my training. Even while cooking in a professional kitchen for five days, I continued to make progress on my transformation goals.

What do you enjoy the most about fitness?

I love moving, feeling free, being active, and knowing that I’m capable of doing just about anything. The best part about the training program is that it has given me very clear goals and guidance to get me into the gym almost every day. I’ve never been more consistent and strong, especially while traveling on the road for work, yet I’m not over-training. I’ve also been inspired to try so many new things: spinning, yoga, boxing, Tae Bo, circuit training, gymnastics, running, and hotel workouts. This variety has added so much fun to my life.

    What are your fitness goals?

I’m always setting new fitness goals as milestones to make continuous progress. For me, it’s important to celebrate along the way, while never getting complacent. Since I have just completed my first figure competition, I am in the process of making new goals for myself. In addition, in the near future, I see myself getting a yoga teacher certification, running with time pacing goals, and picking up boxing or some other form of martial arts. I embrace fitness as a life-long habit – learning new skills like rock climbing or anything else, as opportunities arise – and as lifestyle – with active vacations and spending time moving with my family and friends.

What motivates you to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Sharing an active lifestyle with people I love and respect motivates me every day to maintain my overall health. I’m very fortunate that my husband and I share our love for fitness: we do certifications and workshops together, exchange articles and books to keep learning, and we go to the gym together. I regularly exercise with co-workers, including leading hotel workouts while we are on the road! With my family, I run, cycle, walk and make it an adventure to see the world.

What is the best part about working with Julie?

Julie Lohre is a pro. She’s a serious role model as an IFBB Fitness & Figure Professional card holder, a contributor to Muscle and Fitness Hers Magazine, and a competitor on American Ninja Warrior! (As an avid fan of ANW, watching her amazing try-out video sealed the deal for me choosing her as a coach!). Also, Julie puts her family first. It’s incredible to see how much she’s accomplished, while still being an incredibly good and balanced person.

What is the worst part about working with Julie?

This is a very hard question to answer in the case of working with Julie Lohre. It’s has only been an enormously positive experience.

That said, the hardest thing is that you don’t know what you don’t know. Julie is a treasure trove of knowledge and experience, and she has the immense generosity to share her insights, if only I knew to ask the question… Thankfully, she’s very intuitive and offers input when she might sense things are off-track. She also sends useful weekly emails and publications full of tips and tricks.

    Favorite 'diet' food:

I was a “paleo” eater for many years, which means I didn’t eat grains. I still have a gluten and lactose intolerance, but Julie Lohre has been completely accommodating while bringing more carbohydrates back into my diet to fuel my athletic goals.

For me, eating gluten-free oatmeal with a scoop of UMP is the very best.

    Other Comments

Whatever your goals are, make them happen. If I’ve learned anything in the last year, it has been that it’s not worth holding back (in any area of life) because of fear that I might not be able to do it or worrying about what other people might think.  If it’s your dream, it’s worth pursuing.

Yet, somehow, I am lucky enough to work directly with Julie and she’s taken the time to get to know me and my strengths and weaknesses. I can count on her and that means a lot. She’s the most consistent, knowledgeable, and direct coach I’ve ever had. She responds to every email, is unwavering in her support, and she knows her stuff. It doesn’t get much better than that.
